back to school toolkit: virtual spaces

Thank you for your interest!

Virtual spaces are everywhere and have become a constant presence, offering social connectedness and the ease of instant communication. But the online world of selfies and social media also brings with it challenging situations that can have a negative impact on youth mental health.

Our 2023 toolkit provides information, tips, and resources for young people, caregivers, and school personnel on how to protect youth mental health in a digital world.

Free resources to help young people navigate the virtual world

Back-to-school is always a time met with mixed emotions, especially for the growing numbers of youth that struggle with feelings of anxiety and depression. Mental Health America now has new, free resources to help support parents, teachers, students, caregivers, and others during this time of transition.

The 2023 Mental Health America Back-to-School toolkit focuses on an area that MHA has seen be a key driver of youth mental health concerns: social media and online activity. The toolkit, "Selfies, Social, & Screens: Navigating Virtual Spaces for Youth," provides educational information and tips on how to tackle some of the most common online stressors for youth, like social comparison, body image, misinformation, and cyberbullying.

Inside the toolkit you’ll find:
  • Fact sheets and tips for youth
  • Fact sheets and tips for adults
  • Key messages
  • A sample drop-in article
  • Sample social media posts and images
  • Posters
  • A guide to national and local resources
Download the toolkit

P.S. Looking for more jargon-free mental health resources for youth? Make sure you pick up a copy of our book, “Where to Start: A Survival Guide to Anxiety, Depression, and Other Mental Health Challenges” from the MHA store.

August 30th is National Grief Awareness Day. As a nation since 2014, we mark this day to support our colleagues and those we serve by committing to furthering our understanding, education, and professional development on grief, loss, and bereavement.

Since 2020, our MHTTC Network has been developing free grief, loss, and bereavement resources, and holding Grief Sensitivity Virtual Learning Institutes (“GSVLIs”) to provide a no-cost, high-quality learning experience that strengthens our grief skills, knowledge, and support capacities.

Today, on National Grief Awareness Day,  we are thrilled to announce our 2023 GSVLI! Join us on November 1st and 2nd  to enhance your perspectives and practices to ensure grievers get the support they need.

The theme for our 2023 GSVLI is:

Working with grief in the context of violence: Strengthening our skills to strengthen ourselves

Day 1- Wednesday, November 1st, 2023: General Mental Health Workforce Sessions

  • Special focus on gender-based violence, institutional violence, community violence and grief

Day 2- Thursday, November 2nd, 2023: School Mental Health Workforce Sessions

  • Special focus on school violence & grief

Please note: This is a 2-day event. Session programming for both days will run from 9:00 am-3:00 pm PT * 10:00 am-4:00 pm MT * 11:00 am-5:00 pm CT * 12:00-6:00 pm ET.

Come for some or all of the Institute; please register at the links provided above for the day(s) you wish to attend. Should you wish to attend both days, you will have two separate links, one for each day.

Welcome to fall, counselors, psychs, ssws, and sss's!

Counselors, SSSs, SSWs, and Psychologists,

If you are new, welcome!!!!! If not, welcome back to fall 2023!
Here are some updates and information for you.

Suicide Prevention. Suicide Screening form and docs are on the Staff Portal>Student Services as before. New folks--or those wanting a refresher--can sign up for the virtual 45-minute How to Conduct a Suicide Screening in TTSD.

Teen Intervene. You are invited to attend the Teen Intervene training to learn more about substance use and youth. It is optional, and several counselors took the training last year. Sign up on this Teen Intervene Google form if you are interested in attending the in-person Teen Intervene training Thursday, Oct 5, 9am-1pm, sponsored by Washington County.

Flight Team. This is the time of year when we ask if you are willing to be on the Flight Team Member list to offer support to schools that have had a student or staff death. All interested are welcome--it is rewarding with low time commitment and you already have the skills needed. Watch for that email.

Interns. Please let me know with this Intern Google form if you have an intern working with you this year and their email. That way I can include them in resource and training emails, etc. Consider having your intern sign up for the virtual training How to Conduct a Suicide Screening in TTSD.

Mental Health Blog. This and other resource emails are also posted on the Mental Health @TTSD blog, so all the emails are archived and searchable in case you are looking for a particular topic or info.

Care Coordination. Watch for Care Coordination information from Kelsey Gibbs about services and the new referral form. Care Coordinators help middle and elementary families find mental health services.

Staff Portal. For resources that might be helpful, check out the Staff Portal under Student Services for Counselor/Psych/SSW/SSS Resources and more.

TTSD Website. A reminder that you can point parents/caregivers to the TTSD website Resources page.

What questions do you have?
Take care and have a great September!

Kathy
