Understanding and Addressing Substance Use Disorders among Hispanic and Latine Adolescents and Young Adults: A Conversation for Healthcare Providers

Date: April 5, 2024 @ 1:00 PM - 2:30 PM ET

* We will offer simultaneous interpretation to Spanish. *

Description:

About 27% (2.4 million) of Hispanic/Latine young adults aged 18-25 meet the criteria for a substance use, alcohol use, or drug use disorder, this demographic also being the most likely among all Hispanic age groups of having used illicit drugs at some point. Involving parents and families as part of the conversations with youth around substance use is recognized as a crucial best practice for engagement and treatment within Hispanic and Latine populations.

This panel discussion seeks to equip healthcare providers with knowledge, cultural attuned outreach and engagement strategies, as well as successful practices to effectively communicate with Hispanic/Latine parents about substance use disorders (SUD), overdose risks, and harm reduction strategies in adolescents and young adults. The forum will foster strength-based approaches, trust building capacities and dialogues around lived experiences that help promote awareness, prevention, and support for Hispanic and Latine youth and families who may be affected by substance use issues.

In August & September of 2023, we hosted a Back to School Trauma Informed Practice Series. Now that the school year is midway, we’re back!

Join Leora Wolf-Prusan and the Pacific Southwest MHTTC for a special six-part workshop series designed to offer deep dives into what it means to be trauma-informed in this moment, future directions for the work, and ways to deepen our praxis (theory into action) for our school communities. We’ll come together in purposeful and powerful learning over the course of the series to bring trauma-informed principles and approaches into practice. Come for one, some, or all: we’ll see you there!

SESSION 1

Study Session: A Practical Guide for Implementing a Trauma-Informed Approach

The Framework: Grounding us in Trauma-Informed Principles and Domains

Wednesday, March 20, 2024

2:30 - 4:00 p.m. PT

(view in your timezone)

Description:

In June 2023, SAMHSA released the updated and expanded practical guide from the 2014 resource, Concept of Trauma and Guidance for a Trauma-Informed Approach. Drawing on the domains of trauma-informed work, the new guide offers implementation strategies.

Join PS MHTTC School Mental Health Field Director Leora Wolf-Prusan for an interactive study session. Together, we’ll familiarize ourselves with the guide by 1) defining trauma, trauma-informed care, and connected terminology; 2) identifying resources to support our work; and 3) exploring the guide’s case studies. Walk away with deeper fluency in trauma-informed language, ideas for moving the work forward in your environment, and connections to other trauma-informed practitioners.

Audience:

Educators, school site leaders, school mental health professionals, youth advocates, trauma-informed professionals, and anyone interested. If you attended this session in our Fall Series, this is a great opportunity for a refresher!
