Collaborative Problem Solving

OHA funded The Child Center to help families strengthen positive relationships and build the skills needed for success at home, at school, in the community and throughout life.

Collaborative Problem Solving (CPS) is a philosophy based on the understanding that youth with challenging behaviors may be having delays in the development of skills in five different areas which are needed to adaptively solve problems and make decisions in their lives. CPS works to strengthen existing skills and teach them skills to do better in their environment; the philosophy is that “Kids do well if they can.”

The Child Center:

  • Offers free CPS classes to people throughout Oregon. Sessions are once a week for eight weeks.
  • Is focused on providing services to seven regions in Oregon that have limited mental health provider resources.

For more information, please visit The Child Center’s website and share widely with families and communities.

Warmline

Reach Out Oregon, funded by OHA as part of Oregon Family Support Network, has a warm line at 833-732-2467, a website, a chat room for any family member needing support and a weekly virtual support group.

Family Therapy Webinar recording--strategies for engaging parents/caregivers

\Passing along a webinar recording on Family Therapy. Also covers general strategies for looping in parents/caregivers to help support an adolescent.

Attachment-Based Family Therapy: a family safety net approach to suicide treatment - 2023

Attachment-Based Family Therapy: a family safety net approach to suicide treatment On-Demand Webinar

For adolescent and young adults, family conflict can drive a suicidal crisis and family support can buffer against it. ABFT aims to identify and address the family events (e.g. divorce) and processes (e.g. high demand, low warmth) that may exacerbate the distress and prohibit the family serving as a safety net. Individual sessions with the patient and the parents prepare them for conversations that address attachment ruptures and disappointment. Not only do these conjoint sessions resolve problems but server as in vivo change events where parents practice  new parenting skills and the young person practices new emotion regulation skills. This brief talk will  present the essential theory and elements of this well researched empirically supported therapy.

Hi Traci and Lisa!

I hope this email finds you having a nice, gentle start to 2023!

I'm reaching out from the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) of Washington County. I spoke with you both a couple of months ago about the free mental health education programs we are offering for parents of students in the county this school year, and how we can get the word out to as many families as possible.

Our next NAMI Basics class (our first in-person one since the pandemic!) is starting on January 25th, at the Countryside Community Church in Sherwood. I've attached a graphic promoting the class, which can be shared on social media, in email newsletters, and/or printed out. We would love your help getting the word out to parents who might be interested, in any way you can!

Here's a short blurb about NAMI Basics, if it's helpful for putting in any newsletters, etc.:

Do you want to learn more about youth mental health, and how to support the children in your life? The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) of Washington County is offering a free class starting on January 25th. NAMI Basics is a 6-session education program for parents, caregivers and other family members who provide care for youth (ages 22 and younger) who are experiencing mental health symptoms. It's taught by a trained team with lived experience raising a child with a mental health condition. They know what you’re going through because they've been there too.

When: Wednesday evenings from 7-8:30pm, January 25th - March 1st

Where: Countryside Community Church in Sherwood. 18810 SW Kruger Rd, Sherwood, OR 97140

And here is the link for parents to register (there's also a QR code on the attached graphic!): https://bit.ly/BasicsSherwood

Please let me know if you have any questions or need any more information.

Thank you so much! And happy new year!
