Understanding and Addressing Substance Use Disorders among Hispanic and Latine Adolescents and Young Adults: A Conversation for Healthcare Providers

Date: April 5, 2024 @ 1:00 PM - 2:30 PM ET

* We will offer simultaneous interpretation to Spanish. *

Description:

About 27% (2.4 million) of Hispanic/Latine young adults aged 18-25 meet the criteria for a substance use, alcohol use, or drug use disorder, this demographic also being the most likely among all Hispanic age groups of having used illicit drugs at some point. Involving parents and families as part of the conversations with youth around substance use is recognized as a crucial best practice for engagement and treatment within Hispanic and Latine populations.

This panel discussion seeks to equip healthcare providers with knowledge, cultural attuned outreach and engagement strategies, as well as successful practices to effectively communicate with Hispanic/Latine parents about substance use disorders (SUD), overdose risks, and harm reduction strategies in adolescents and young adults. The forum will foster strength-based approaches, trust building capacities and dialogues around lived experiences that help promote awareness, prevention, and support for Hispanic and Latine youth and families who may be affected by substance use issues.

Date: April 5 @ 1:00PM- 2:30PM ET

Subject: Presentation: Substance Use Stigma within School Settings

Hi Everyone,

Please also ‘Save the Date’ for our January 8th Learning Collaborative meeting at 1pm where both Planners and Providers will convene.  We are excited to announce we were able to  collaborate with a guest speaker who will address substance use stigma within school settings. We are excited about this opportunity to hear from Lydia Bartholow and anticipate it will be an impactful session. Lydia Bartholow, DNP, PMHNP, CARN-AP, is a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner in Psychiatric Emergency Services and Assistant Professor at OHSU. She specializes in addiction medicine, harm reduction, health justice, and trauma-informed care. You can learn more about her work and experience from her website.

If your district is in need of additional Teen Intervene 4th Edition books, please let us know by December 15th how many your district would like to request. There is a holiday sale with significant savings on shipping cost and Washington County may be able to purchase additional books.

Thank you and please let me know if you have any questions,

Exploring the Relationship Between Bullying and Substance Use webinarTue, May 23 2023, 11am-12pm PT (2 - 3pm ET)--Information & Registration here.
While researchers agree that students who participate in the cycle of bullying (victim, bullies, and bystanders) experience a higher risk for substance use, the explanations for this association are less clearly understood.  While these associations are not considered causal, through the study of the co-occurrence of bullying and substance use, we have learned more about the factors related to substance use which can be considered in preventive interventions. Despite the obvious utility of a brain-based understanding of addiction, researchers also acknowledge the contributions of environmental risk factors upon substance abuse. A particular environmental risk factor, bullying, which is common in childhood and adolescence, has not yet been adequately considered in the development of the use of and addictive behaviors to substances. In this presentation, Dr. Laura Crothers will discuss the relationship between substance use (predictive or a consequence) and perpetration of bullying or victimization through bullying, the risks of both behaviors, and recommendations for educators in addressing these common problems of childhood and adolescence. Mr. Chuck Klevgaard will draw on his experience in collective impact and prevention-focused partnerships to share his understanding of the relationship between substance use and bullying and discuss prevention resources available to providers. This webinar will be moderated by Dr. Charles Irwin, an active member of the Children’s Safety Now Alliance (CSN-A).
